If you are suffering from Plantar Fasciitis, or know someone diagnosed with this terrible pain in the heel, I literally share your pain. I have been pledged with it, but now recovering. Runners and joggers are generally worse off with this condition because they land more heavily on their feet, and the shooting pains for sufferers can be very severe, unless they have picked the best running shoe that will cushion the shocks as their feet make contact with the ground.
Shooting pains in my heel were my first observation, and I initially thought it will go away with a dose of regular pain killers. But a couple of weeks later, the pains have grown progressively worse.

The doctor looked at me at this point, and said the word I heard for the first time – Plantar Fasciitis, which I now know many refer to as just PF, and which gave me severe pains for many months after.
I was prescribed higher strength pain killers, which helped with longer intervals without pain. I rested my foot as much as I can, and used gel inserts in my shoes to cushion and support my heel. The key to healing though, were a choice of exercises that strengthen my sore heel ligament. My doctor explained it could take months for full recovery. That was over a year now, and I still feel pains in my heel, now and again.
The agony and discomfort from my Plantar Fasciitis meant I could not jog or run any more, and that is when I started learning more about the ailment, and my quest for the best running shoes for Plantar Fasciitis pains really took root.

So What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar Fasciitis is an inflammation of the long webby ligament that is attached to your heel bone, and stretches through the sole, to the middle foot bones. This stretchy ligament that acts like a spring supporting the arch, is your Planta Fascia. The inflammation is usually accompanied with pains, caused by repeated small injuries or tears. As we walk, jog or run, in order to move one foot forward, we lift our body weight on the other foot, and at this point, the full weight rest on the Planta Fascia.
This repetitive weight bearing process in walking, jogging or running can damage or rupture the stretchy ligament in our feet, lead to an inflamed Plantar Fascia tissue. And believe me, you don’t want to wish the pain it can cause on your worst enemy.
I found that inserts, and some of the best shoes for Plantar Fasciitis sufferers can help you heal quicker, otherwise, the damage ligament can take months to heal, putting you out of jogging or running.
The Symptoms of My Plantar Fasciitis
After visiting my doctor, and a bit of research, I could actually trace the source of my pain to about 4 cm from my heel, towards the centre of your sole. This spot felt tender when I touch it, and more painful to the the slightest poke with my finger.
The pain from my Planta Fasciitis was often more excruciating when I wake up in the morning, and take the first step out of bed. I also felt more pain after seating down, or resting for long periods in a position where there is no weight on my feet. People around me noticed that I am walking with a limp, leaning to the left, as I try to shift my weight away from my hurting right foot.

The explanations of possible causes of Planta Fasciitis I received were quite clear and simple, and I could see why any of the following could lead to pains in the heel:
- If your job require you to be on your feet for long periods, or you do a lot of standing, walking, or running and have not been trained on how to handle your situation properly.
- If you have changed the type of surface you exercise, like switching from running on soft trails to harder tracks which would put more strain on your feet.
- If you are overweight, which will add load on your Planta Fascia.
- Sudden stretching of the sole, or overuse can also lead to damage to your Planta Fascia. Think of athletes with poor techniques sprinting off the block, and potentially damaging their heel ligament.
- Those with tight Achilles tendon can loose the ability to flex their ankle which can lead to damage to the Fascia tissue
- Shoes with poor cushioning, or poor arch support are also common causes of Planta Fasciitis.
I learnt also that though people with sedentary lifestyle are prone to develop this condition, often there is no apparent cause, particularly in older people. I can definitely say that in my case, it was ill fitting shoes that I wore over the years that damaged my Fascia.
I love smart fitting dress shoes, and in my younger years, preferred shoes that are one or half a size under my normal size because they look smarter. What a mistake, and a very painful one. You should never stuff your feet in shoes that are either too tight or loose, as the they will leave you with potentially lasting damage to your feet.
My Heel Pains Relieve and Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis
I followed a sequence and combination of treatments which were very effective in relieving the pains in my heel, healed the inflammation and gradually straightened my weakened ligament. My healing process was slow but steady, and at times when I have gone back to jogging too soon, the pains did actually come back with more intensity.
- Stronger Painkiller – This was the immediate treatment I started with since my pain was already so severe before I saw a doctor. It gave me longer periods to walk around without pain.
- The next thing I did, was buy some really good gel insole for my shoes. They provided the shock absorption and even pressure distribution needed in my old shoes. This helped to cushion my heel and provide support for my arch. My old shoes felt a lot more comfortable with the gel pads.
- I rested my foot as often as I can, and stopped jogging or running, and avoid walking barefoot on hard surfaces, until I bought my first running shoe for Planta Fasciitis.
- I was given several exercises to try that helped quicken the treatment and healing of my Plantar Fasciitis, but I will just share one that I found more convenient to carry out, which also turned out to be very effective for me.
The Treatment That Worked for Me
Seating on a chair, with my knees bent at right angles, and heels flat on the floor. I would then lift my forefoot upwards, until I feel a stretch in my arch. Holding this position for a few seconds, I would relax my foot, and repeat the exercise for about 10 times at a go.
I performed this about six times a day, or even more when I can. If you work long hours in an office like I do, and suffering from heel pains, give this exercise a try; it was very effective in relieving the pains I experienced from Plantar Fasciitis.
The first steps when I get out of bed in the morning were very painful, so I carry out above Planta Fascia stretching exercise when I wake up – before taking the first step after getting out of bed. This works like a charm for me, and I could walk around in the morning without feeling the excruciating pains in my heel. I encourage you to give this wake up exercise a try.
I may be wrong, but I seriously believed ill-fitting shoes were the cause of my heel pains, so I tried on all my shoes, and those I consider very uncomfortable were quickly given away or binned. I bought new shoes with good heel support to replace some of them. If you are still wearing the type of shoes I just mentioned, you are putting yourself at risk of suffering from Plantar Fascitis. While mine may have been caused by poor fitting shoes that I have worn for many years, Planta Fasciitis is also known to strike people with flaws in the structure of their feet. Such flaws may include tight Achilles tendon, flat or high arched feet and excessive pronation.
Pads and gel insoles in your old good fitting shoes may help when you have developed heel pains, but insoles do move around inside shoes and if they are not properly fitted, may even cause you more damage than benefit. In my experience, inserts for Planta Fasciitis are no match for shoes that have been well designed to provide the necessary cushion for heels, and give good arch and toe support for your feet.
